Listening to Hidden Voices

Case study: Beginning a Conversation with Faith Leaders on Lesbian, Gay, and
Bisexual issues, an approach.

Listening to Hidden Voices – the Experience of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People of Faith
(Listening to Hidden Voices), was as event held in partnership between West Midlands Faiths
Forum and Birmingham Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Community Trust on
10th June 2010. The event was held in Aston University Chaplaincy with support from the
National Equality Partnership (NEP).

The idea for the event began with a number of conversations between Steph Keeble and
David Viney of the Birmingham LGBT Community Trust, Revd Chris Dowd of Journey
Metropolitan Church and Aston University Chaplaincy, and Jane Gallagher and Revd Gareth
Jones from the West Midlands Faiths Forum.

All the people concerned believed that an event exploring issues of faith and sexual
orientation was much needed, for two main reasons:
• the subject of faith and sexual orientation, while it is explored in some faith groups, it is
rarely, if ever, discussed in all and has rarely been discussed at inter-faith meetings
• the new Equality Act legislation makes it important for faith communities and inter-faith
groups to be aware of the implications of this legislation for themselves
This case study captures the process used to develop and design the event, what happened
on the day and how people who attended responded. This case study has been written by
the planning group and NEP.
